  1. Language is human communication through 
  2. speech, writing, or both. Different 
  3. nationalities or ethnic groups typically have 
  4. different languages or variations on 
  5. particular languages, e.g. Armenians speaking 
  6. the Armenian language and the British and 
  7. Americans speaking distinctive varieties of 
  8. the English language. One language may have 
  9. various dialects, which may be seen by those 
  10. who use them as languages in their own right.

  12. The term is also used for systems of 
  13. communication with language-like qualities, 
  14. such as animal language (the way animals 
  15. communicate), body language (gestures and 
  16. expressions used to communicate ideas), sign 
  17. language (gestures for the deaf or for use as 
  18. a lingua franca, as among American Indians), 
  19. and computer languages (such as BASIC and 
  20. COBOL).
